Kobus

As Crous was from the Springbok Nude girls, South Africa's most coveted Rock group and Blom from Voice of Destruction, the pioneer metal group in South Africa, they surprised everyone with their very mellow first album.

Their debut album, Kobus! was named SA Rock digest's album of the year in 2002 and Hoenderman still remains the most downloaded mp3 ever on the site.

Their second album followed in 2004, aptly titled 100% Skuldgevoelvry, these guys didn't feel guilty about anything. The album contained some heavier songs, returning to Blom and Crous' roots, the suits went out the window and more props were added to live shows, they also used guests to fill out their live performances - Paul Andre Blom and Rob Nel helped during these years.

With the brilliant lyrics, unique music and brain shattering live shows they were carving out a huge fan base.

After a year of agonizing silence, 2007 saw a metamorphosis from Kobus! to K.O.B.U.S! and creating a first in Afikaans music, they produced a heavy metal album titled 'SwaarMetaal' (Heavy Metal). The band were expanded to 4 members with Paul Andre Blom and Pierre Tredoux joining them on drums and bass.

More about the latest album SWAAR METAAL

Once again Blom & Crous have created a first in local music. Their metamorphosis from KOBUS! to K.O.B.U.S! takes the heaviest, darkest elements of their previous two border shifting albums and drags it onward into the shadows of their latest, more uniform audio approach, a bonecrunching heavy metal album comprising of 10 tracks which take the listener on a brilliant, unrelenting journey from finely observed social commentary to the metaphysical realm of the dead… and beyond.

With a more uniform approach to sound and lyrical content, as apposed to their previous two offerings, KOBUS! is again at the cutting edge of innovation and the forefront of local rock. The current nature of their music now has the ability to blur the line between historically ‘afrikaans’ and ‘english’ venues and their audiences.

Recent press quotes reflect why SWAAR METAAL is currently being hailed by media as one of the most siginificant releases of 2007:

“From the first listen it blew my socks off! Not only is it the best SA album I've heard in a long time it's also the best damn metal album of the decade!” Dr Mullet.

“The sound is awesome, the musicianship spectacular, and the lyrics a masterpiece of social observation brilliantly conveyed in a language particularly suited to the harsh vocal quality of metal.” BD The Citizen

Want: K.O.B.U.S! is rowwer, harder en reguiter as ooit. Profete loof SWAAR METAAL reeds as een van 2007 se grotes.” Republikein

Deborah Steinmar

Dis regte heavy metal.” Beeld Plus

“Fabulous wild action from this local metal four-piece. This 10-track jagged metal outing confirms Kobus!`s status as an up-and-coming rock band of note.” Jane Mayne, Cape Times.

Tertius Kapp, MK89.

“So goed as wat F-kar is, K.O.B.U.S! is hulle net eenvoudig drie oor. (K.O.B.U.S!) Kalahari.net

“Their heavy-metal packs a seriously lobotomising punch, with an idio-syncratic head-bangers ball appeal …ingeniously original satire” Miles Keylock, Mail & Guardian

“As we staggered out of the Bohemian in the early hours of the morning, I was convinced we had just witnessed a landmark moment in South African music. K.O.B.U.S! had just stormed the castle and proclaimed themselves King.” Loyd Gedye, Isolation – live review.

“I've just converted a 21-year-old Indian girl to fan status, and that breadth of appeal makes Swaarmetaal a crucial local album for any metalhead's collection.” Michael Schmidt, Tonight.

“But occasionally i hear a metal album and just think, man, no matter what you're into you've got to acknowledge that that's a nice heavy album, whether your usual thing be Dimmu Borghir or Seputura or Korn or whatever. Last time i felt that was with the new Slayer album and Swaar Metaal honest to god gives me that same feeling.” Clive’s Dominion.

“Indien jy jou CD-versameling ’n lekker skop plaaslike musiek wil gee, gee dit K.O.B.U.S! se derde album, SwaarMetaal. Adele Steyn, Die Matie

Clarissa Grobler, Die Volksblad
